A hidden gem of holistic education
In a pocket of forest in Knysna, lies Riverwood School. It’s more than just an excellent educational institution—it’s a nurturing community where children can fully embrace their individuality and develop academically, emotionally, and creatively.
A better world starts with better and different ways of teaching and raising children.
Riverwood School in Knysna adds invaluable elements to the education of your children, teaching them about interconnectedness and fostering a deep respect for life and nature. We also understand that every teacher is a student too, and that we learn much from spending time with children who naturally bring their fresh perspective to the world.

Eco-Focused Learning
With a spectacular forest playground, nature is seamlessly integrated into the school’s curriculum. Children learn about the earth, conservation, and sustainability. From cultivating vegetable gardens in pre-primary to termly excursions exploring local nature and conservation sites, students are regularly immersed in the natural world.

This eco-conscious ethos lays the foundation for raising responsible, thoughtful adults who care about the planet.
Scientific studies show that nature immersion enhances creativity, problem-solving abilities, and cognitive development in children (Louv, 2008). Our practical, hands-on approach to eco-education encourages these skills while fostering a sense of mindful environmental stewardship.
Music, Drama and Arts
Traditional academics are undeniably important, while there’s growing recognition that a narrow focus on academics alone isn’t sufficient to prepare children for life.
At Riverwood, we nurture not just the mind but also the creativity and individuality of every child. Many schools prioritise academic performance over creativity and personal growth from a young age. We stand apart.

We put great focus on music, culture and arts and our students learn to sing, dance, act and play musical instruments. But it doesn’t stop there; they get to produce and perform musicals and other shows and learn everything that is involved in putting a show together. Together with the children, we showcase their talents, build their confidence and hone their unique skills.
We also take part in the Garden Route Eisteddfod with Drama and Music pieces each year.
So, practical, artistic, and musical education form an integral part of our well-rounded curriculum. Research highlights that participation in music and drama enhances communication skills, emotional intelligence, teamwork and self-confidence.
Sports and Social Skills
In addition to an impressive arts program, Riverwood offers a lot of different sports, ensuring every child has the opportunity to develop physical skills, coordination, teamwork, and resilience.
Riverwood School plays regular sports matches and tournaments and offers hockey, athletics, swimming, netball, soccer, mini-cricket and cricket. In the pre-primary school, we teach a foundational movement programme.

We also offer extra mural activities such as Drama Club, Homework Club, Reading Club, Spelling Bee, Chess, Eco-club, Coding, Arts & Crafts, and junior and senior choir.
Beyond physical development, our school’s community atmosphere fosters strong social connections, playfully teaching children emotional intelligence, empathy, and social skills.
